Maybe you’re one of those people who think that self development, such as self help books and audio training, are stupid, unnecessary and quite corny. If so, I know where you’re coming from. I used to think that way myself. I used to believe that sort of stuff can’t really help you find success in life; it was all just people trying to make a fortune off the naive public, right?

Well, in some cases that’s true, but I now believe that a personal self development program can be very beneficial and maybe even necessary to someone who is pursuing success in the business world. I especially believe this to be true within the realm of online network marketing and affiliate marketing.

About four years ago, I had to ask myself, after being exposed to self help and motivational resources for the first time, can self development really help you in your relationships, in your outlook on life, and perhaps most importantly to those reading this post (and to me at the time), in your quest to become financially independent?

The answer is absolutely yes. It can and it will help you if you approach it with the right attitude and then apply the information that you read in books or listen to on cd’s. I am living proof of this, and I also can point to many other examples of successful network marketers and others with successful online and offline businesses that give so much credit to their continual self development for being able to become financially free.

No matter what you’re trying to accomplish in life, I’d recommend a self development program to help you get there. Reading is really the most important and beneficial habit you can get into. All of the classics are worthwhile, such as The Magic of Thinking Big, Think and Grow Rich and The Master Key to Riches. But I’d also recommend some lesser known books, like Developing the Leader Within You, Attitude is Everything and The Pursuit.

There are so many other self help books out there, and more being written every year, that could really propel you on to financial success if you make it a habit to read them frequently, adopt their fundamentals and then eventually apply them in your life.

I’m not as big on audio training and cd’s, but they do have their place and many people have benefited greatly from them. If possible, I would look for some type of third party training that is objective and not trying to sell you anything. Look for something that could be applied to any business endeavor and not a program that is just trying to shove more motivational products down your throat. You can play them in your car or have them on in the house as you’re doing other things. Even if you’re not listening attentively all the time, this type of training tends to seep in subconsciously over time and you will begin to act on what you have learned.

But no matter which format you choose, whether it be books, cd’s, ebooks, online audio, or even independent seminars and conferences (that aren’t selling you a specific business opportunity), you can be certain that you will see a significant benefit and improvement in your life. In reality, if you really dive into self development with everything you have and make the decision to apply the principles you’ve learned, you can change your life for the better in as little as 30 days!

How is that, you ask? Reading a book like The Magic of Thinking Big, for example, if you read it with an open mind and a willingness to change, can have a profound impact on your life immediately and can cause you to start to act in a way that will attract the things you want in your life almost immediately. If you don’t believe me, just try it and see. It’s actually difficult to read a book like that one and not have more self-confidence and a better overall attitude afterwards. Not only that, but it will help you to succeed financially too if you apply the thought process to your business or job.

That leads me to the network marketing industry, and the importance that so many leaders put on self development, many times for the wrong reasons. There are so many people in this industry, both online and offline, that try to continuously sell you motivational tools like the ones I mentioned above and get you addicted so that you keep buying more and more. This self help business becomes bigger than the actual MLM business many times and the people at the top of an organization make millions off their downline feeding into this “side” business.

A classic example of this is in the traditional, offline Amway business, where motivational organizations continue to steal money from distributors by virtually forcing them to continue to buy books, cd’s and seminars, which all reinforce the need for more books, cd’s and seminars. Nevermind that these tools do almost nothing to help you build your actual Amway business. That’s unimportant to the people at the top raking in big profits every day. They couldn’t care less if you succeed in Amway or not, but they do care that you continue to have hope, and nothing creates hope like the motivational tools they peddle. This is a perfect example of the type of program NOT to get into, because they don’t have your self improvement in mind in order for you to make money in your business, they just care about taking your money.

So as you can see, it’s very easy to get lured into the wrong type of network marketing motivational training program. That’s why if you’re looking for success in this industry, I suggest experts who aren’t pushing their business opportunity on you, just their knowledge and experience. A good example of this is Jonathan Budd. He gives you excellent network marketing success tips and the proper mindset for Internet business success, but he doesn’t push his specific MLM company on you.

There are other online gurus out there that offer the same kind of value without the sales push for their companies, like Mike Dillard and Ann Sieg, but Budd’s program is the best, and the cheapest that I’ve seen.

Make no mistake about it, you do need the right mindset to succeed in network marketing, even if you’re doing it online. A person with the wrong type of attitude will give up on his opportunity or marketing efforts way too soon, or he simply won’t take the right actions to succeed. If you’re going to make it with your own system and your own company on the Internet, you will need to develop yourself on a consistent basis. You will probably need to shift your way of thinking from what it is now. That’s why reading self help books isn’t so stupid after all. It could be the thing that leads you to financial freedom.

To recruit others into your business, which we all know is the by far the most important element to making money, you will need to attract others not just to your company, but also to yourself. You cannot do this without the proper mindset. Even on the Internet, people can sense your level of confidence and positivity when you sell your business. Plus, at some point you’re going to have to communicate with them through email, and possibly over the phone. You cannot afford to not possess the wealth mentality that these types of self development tools create in you if you are going to experience true network marketing success.
